Hillside Festival
Guelph, Ontario, July 22-24
By Jason MacNeil

Originally started in 1984, the Hillside Festival has gone from a small one-day affair to an elaborate but homey three-day event with music, arts and spoken word, among many other things. It's here you can check out the Bollywood Bistro, pick up a new felt side-kick from the Banjo Puppets stand and give one of the colourful Hula Hoops on offer from Gazoo Hoops a whirl, all while enjoying the sounds of Hillside.

Can't Miss Acts:

The Dears: Though the Montreal band recently appeared in a 'Funny or Die' sketch, chances are they'll be more focused on the riffs than getting you to crack a smile. But who knows, Natalia Yanchak recently stretched her creative legs by releasing some creative fiction so perhaps she might be as bold as to continue the Dears comedic trip. Either way, fans should lap up this performance as this gig is the last chance (announced at least) to catch the veterans live this summer.

Rural Alberta Advantage: Toronto indie rock trio Rural Alberta Advantage have had an epic year, celebrating the release (and acclaimed) of their sophomore album, 'Departing.' As of late, rumours have been circulating about "an all-night underwater video shoot" for the song 'Muscle Relaxants' but there's no word on when it'll be released -- we're guessing it will make quite the splash, though (sorry, we couldn't resist). 07/08/11 >> go there
