Various Artists: Ishumar 2: New Tuareg Guitars (PID)
By Loyd Gedye

The first Ishumar compilation, released in 2008, has been the best attempt so far by any label to compile recordings by various Tuareg musicians. It featured work by all the big names, including Tinariwen, Etran Finatawa and Terakaft, as well as some lesser-known acts at the time such as Koudede and Tamikrest.

Now in 2011 we get Ishumar 2, another stellar compilation of Tuareg desert blues. This time there are no familiar names, with 12 great new tracks from up-and-coming Tuareg musicians.

Opener Anchar by the Ibrahim Djo Experience offers up the kind of blues that Tinariwen and Terakaft specialise in, and Amanar offer up a sound that seems influenced by the dirty electric blues of Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside. Tarbiyat and Kel Assouf offer up a more laid-back acoustic sound, and Nabil Othmani's Edjmayegh S'emeli sounds like it could have come straight off a JJ Cale record, if Cale was singing in Tamashek, that is.

This is a fascinating insight into the world of Tuaraeg blues and hopefully we will see some full albums by some of these artists making their way to international markets soon. 07/01/11 >> go there
