This Cape Town indie-afro-fusion had only been around for about a year when they were chosen to be the opener for Thabo Mbeki and South African Parliament, which, for the sake of clarification, is not the name of a band. They were the warm up act for the President. We’d say that’s a pretty damn decent indicator that they got a handle on this “music” thing. In addition to a unique blend of African folk music and indie, Freshlyground also boasts the single greatest name for a drummer ever monikered: Seredeal “Shaggy” Scheepers. Friend that guy immediately.
