Blind listening to Radio Africa, Freshlyground's latest self-released record, you might never know that this highly refined mix originates in Cape Town. Vocalist Zolani Mahola can be a smooth romantic R&B diva. Other songs are in her native Xhosa complete with the traditional between-verses musical interjections. Les Nubians add their francophone verses to "Big Man," making sure nobody misses the point ("it's a drag!"). But the band is unlike any other, owing as much influence to Turtle Island as standard Afropop with flute and sax featured along with violin. "Working Class" has the anger of a hip-hop anthem and the swinging beat that would segue well with samba or Beausoleil on their swampiest.
