Shusmo - drawing its name from the Arabic word for “whatchamacallit” - is a band that strives to be hard to describe. The band was founded by Palestinian multi-instrumentalist Tareq Abboushim, who had the idea forge an “Arabic alternative music” by using traditional instruments like the buzuq folk-lute and classical melodic modes known as maqam outside of traditional contexts. The result is a band that manages to seriously rock out with the unlikely combination of buzuq, clarinet, bass, and percussion. On “Longa Nakreez,” funk and rock textures blend seamlessly with Arabic musical material in a fusion that avoids feeling forced or stale by pairing gritty production quality and stellar musicianship. On Thursday at Joe’s Pub, Shusmo releases their sophomore album, Mumtastic.
