Tuesday, September 27, 2011 10:29 AM

Frigg, the renowned Scandinavian fiddlers, will be back on stage at the Crystal Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. Advance tickets are $12; at the door, $15. (Crystal Theatre photo)CRYSTAL FALLS—Crystal Theatre will welcome back the renowned Scandinavian fiddle group Frigg to its stage Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.  The concert will be the grand finale to Frigg’s North American tour, which also included major festivals in Chicago, Albuquerque, N.M., and Bloomington, Ind. Named after the Norse goddess of love and fertility, Frigg rebuffs the melancholy and minor label often assigned to Finnish music. The good times of Nordic parties, dances and weddings inspired the seven-member group with deep folk roots to breathe fresh life into their ancestors’ wild and merry tunes. They like to call it “Nordgrass.”

Three Frigg fiddlers are fourth generation members of the famous Jarvela family of fiddlers from Kaustinen, a small Finnish town of 5,000, that boasts hundreds of fiddle players. Two others in the group hail from other parts of Finland, and the Larsen brothers are from central Norway. Playing as a duo since childhood, the Larsens have won several prestigious awards at Norway’s national traditional music competition.   “Though steeped in tradition and highly trained,” says one reviewer, “Frigg’s vibe remains spontaneous and democratic. This happy-go-lucky feel leads to moments of barely controlled chaos live.” “We go over the edge,” admits Antti Jarvela, fiddler and founder of Frigg. “We even lose track of where we are in the music, but so long as someone keeps the tune going, it doesn’t matter. Different characters emerge from behind the instruments, and the audience goes crazy.” “Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the fiddling phenomenon of Frigg,” says Crystal Theatre Manager Charlie Sandstrom. “People are still talking about their first performance on our stage two years ago. We’re delighted to have them back.” Advanced tickets may be purchased for $12 at Ben Franklin’s in Crystal Falls, Central Arts and Gifts and the Iron County Chamber Office in Iron River, Steamin’ Joe’s in Florence and the Music Tree in Iron Mountain. Tickets may also be ordered online at www.thecrystaltheatre.org or by phoning 875-6867. Admission at the door is $15 for adults and $5 for students. 09/27/11 >> go there
