Slide to Freedom (featuring Doug Cox and Salil Bhatt): 20,000 Miles – review

From Davy Graham to Bob Brozman and Ry Cooder, there's a long tradition of western guitarists who became fascinated with Indian music. Now comes the Canadian slide player Doug Cox, who is joined by Salil Bhatt, whose father VM Bhatt recorded the Grammy-winning A Meeting by the River with Cooder. Like his father, Salil plays a specially designed instrume nt that's a cross between the Indian veena and a guitar; here it's used not just for Indian-influenced fusion pieces, driven on by the fine tabla playing of Cassius Khan, but for unexpected excursions into Americana. So there are Indian-edged reworkings of blues and country songs from Chuck Berry and Hank Williams, along with driving, so-called sacred steel gospel styles (which originated in African-American churches, where lap steel guitar took the place of the organ) featuring sacred steel guitar exponents Calvin Cooke and the Campbell Brothers. And the cool, driving country vocals are by Korean singer Betty Soo, now a celebrity in Texas. An intriguing fusion. 11/10/11 >> go there
