KG OMULO, Ayah Ye! Moving Train (self-released): (3.5 stars out of 5)
A winning mash of rock and Afrobeat from a Kenya-raised artist transplanted to New England as a teen and now based in Florida. Omulo’s concerns cover the humanitarian gamut from healthcare and education to crooked politicos and pollution, but the skittering organ, thunderous horns and undeniable conviction with which he delivers them saves his lyrics from being too heavy-handed. The polyrhythmic drum lines driving “Intervention” and “No Means No” slam as hard as Omulo’s message, while the celebratory “Quality Women” throbs with a rhythmic urgency that would do Isaac Hayes proud.
