The legendarily ambitious Uzbek dance diva takes a backward swerve on Tortadur, exploring her country’s traditional repertoire in the company of septuagenarian musicians.
Recorded in dim light, the music unfolds in slow contemplation, gut-stringed doutar and tanbour weeping behind her as her band hum and moan. Her only production tricks are to sing into resonant crockery and duet with a train.
