Dünya: A Story of The City...Constantinople, Istanbul
David Honigmann
Boston- based collective speed through 15 centuries of metropolitan music
The Boston-based collective Dünya, under the musical direction of Turkish expatriate Mehmet Ali Sanlikol, speeds through fifteen centuries of metropolitan music, starting with an Orthodox Kyrie and ending with the Turkish popular music known as Arabesk, churning with wah-wah guitar. Along the way Ottoman court music jostles vertiginously with Crusader love ballads and whirling Sufi devotions.
