Festival in the Desert

Some are already calling Festival one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. The jury may have to deliberate on that verdict for a while yet, but this 20-song souvenir of last January's gathering in Essakane, Mali is certainly a thing of beauty. Highlights include spirit-nourishing tracks from Tinariwen, Afel Bocoum, Lo'Jo and Django, Oumou Sangare, Blackfire, Ali Farka Toure and-really-former Led Zeppelin strutter Robert Plant.    JT 12/01/03
