In January 2003, B&N.com editor Mark Schwartz traveled to the sandy depths of northern Mali for the third annual Festival in the Desert, a gathering of thousands of Tuareg nomads and a couple hundred reckless foreigners. The trip took him literally to Timbuktu and farther -- 70 kilometers farther, in fact, to the unmapped oasis of Essakane. There, more than 30 artists from Mali, Niger, and Mauritania -- as well as Europe and the U.S. -- entertained the turbaned masses and their camels. Sword fighting, camel racing, sand hockey, and pot after pot of Tuareg tea provided daily amusement before the music began each night under the starry Sahara sky.
