This video and song are a montage of world music – a fusion as it says from Uyuni to Java – just two keywords that bridges the song and video. Uyuni, in Bolivia, is also known as Tunupa and are the world’s largest salt flats (Salar in Spanish). These arid landscapes are not well populated and a world away, and a world of a difference from Java. Java is home to 130 million people. Roughly, 2000 people per square mile, thereby making it one of the most densely-populated places on earth. World differences unite and merge when it comes to music and beliefs….

Another keyword is Huaycapata – the center of the four cardinal points from which the indigenous empire of Peru extended out into the world. In the old tongue of the Incas,  Huaycapata refers to “el centro de los cuatro suyos”. The song sings thus, “te unes al suyo, ese cerro no es tuyo. . .”

An Aymara legend tells that the mountains Tunupa, Kusku and Kusina, which surround the Uyuni salt flats, were actually deities. Tunupa married Kusku, but Kusku ran away from her with Kusina. Grieving Tunupa started to cry while breast-feeding her son. Her tears mixed with milk and formed the Salar de Uyuni, which is also known as the Salar de Tunupa.

Its basically a call back to basics, away from science and pride – to more lowly shrubs like the coralito, local culture and hybrids of cultures. All resulting “on the other side of the moon, while one gets lost inside a lagoon under the spell bound magical protection of the blessed wairuro seed” – in this exotic blend of world music called Tunupa by Kali Mutsa.
