In a recent DipNote, current Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Tara Sonenshine blogged about the importance of cultivating public diplomacy programs that encourage innovation; promote open, free, transparent, and fair economic systems; and promote economic renewal at home. OneBeat, a new collaboration between the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, is just such an initiative. It builds on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy and seeks to leverage aspiring musical talents and assets in communities across the world. From September 10 through October 7, 32 musicians from 21 countries (ages 19-35) will come together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop ways that music can make a positive impact on local and global communities. Hailing from a wide range of musical traditions — hip hop, electronic, roots, jazz, rock, experimental, and more — they each have a powerful commitment to using music to inspire, engage, educate, and transform society. What makes OneBeat so compelling is the way it leverages new processes of innovation, which are increasingly collaborative and multi-dimensional. The project highlights the social aspect of creativity and presupposes a real knowledge-sharing among contributors, who come from highly varied musical backgrounds and from all over the world.
08/24/12 >> go there
