In each of the past two years, Nuit Blanche New York’s (NBNY) “Bring to Light” has brightened the Greenpoint sky for a night, drawing more than 25,000 people to view its light, sound and projection art installations. This year, the organizers have announced, they will forego running New York’s branch of the global arts festival in favor of a month-long series of art installations and performances.

From Saturday, October 6th through Wednesday, October 31st, NBNY will take over the former home of the American Rope Factory’s maritime operations, at 67 West Street, reopening it to the public as The Autumn Bowl, the name of the skate park that inhabited the space until 2010.

In addition to showcasing artists working with a variety of media, the Autumn Bowl promises a wide range of events. Kicking off the series at the 19th century site will be the musicians of OneBeat, a cultural exchange featuring 32 artists from 21 countries. Organized by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, OneBeat explores the transformative power of the arts through original music and people-to-people diplomacy. Under this program, young musicians from around the world will come together over the next two years to write, produce and perform new music. They will also lead engagement events with local youth, and develop strategies for using music to make a positive impact on local and global communities.

The OneBeat tour started in Florida on September 10th, when the artists met to collaborate before taking the show up the coast. They’ve toured the US since, paired with video environments designed by Brooklyn-based artists, Cartune Xprez and will play their final show at The Autumn Bowl.

Other collaborations will include performances organized by Monkeytown founder Montgomery Knott, a benefit for The Storefront for Art and Architecture and an evening of live music curated by musician Andrew W.K.

During the Autumn Bowl, visuals by Cartune Xprez will be paired with individual musicians and an installation by artist and architect Francisco Ugarte, freshly arrived from Mexico, will also be featured. The series wraps with the Halloween Hell Raiser on October 31st.

Representatives of NBNY say they hope to return Bring to Light to Greenpoint next year.
