Sounds of Chicago could be even better than the tastes

By Kevin Williams Chicago Tribune reporter

The Taste of Chicago has a tough hustle.

Over the years, it’s always been “We have this really awesome food, and a little bit of entertainment.” The musical acts were good, but not what anyone would consider great. And that was okay. There were turkey legs.

Now, thanks to fiscal reality and the need to get paid, Taste of Chicago is “This really awesome food, and a heaping helping of entertainment.” Purse strings were tightened, duration reduced, and ... shudder ... the seats cost money now, which changes everything.

In the past, the seats at the Petrillo Music Shell were first-come, first-served. This year, the X,000 seats cost $25 each, per night. Whether that’s a lot or a pittance depends on how much you like the main act, as well as your view of egalitarianism. Because it’s $25 for the first row, or the last row. So yes, that means people will still be lining up to get seats.

“Nobody’s forcing you,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said recently. “I’m not telling you you have to go. What I’m suggesting is we try to reform this so taxpayers aren’t on the hook. If you want to go listen to the music, it will cost.”

Okay. The good thing is that Taste of Chicago has stepped up its musical game. Better still, the most exciting part of the event, the Bud Light Stage, is all free, all the time.

Thursday

6:40-8 p.m.: Mucca Pazza. You've heard of them; now see the wonder for yourself. This marching band that performs with at least 20 people rocks like a punk band. Great sounds, spectacular show.
