Assiton Mamani Keita is Mali's version of the anonymous disco diva. She knows the ancient singing traditions of Mali as well as Martha Wash or N'Dea Davenport know soul and gospel but to truly shine, she needs a producer; enter Fench-rocker-turned-beatmeister Marc Minelli. He's programmed Bamako's latest mix of ancient and future for the space between the dance floor and the chill-out room, and though Keita's acrid voice seems slight in places, the unique flow of her native Bambara gives Minelli's effects the necessary weight. 05/15/03
