Mamani Keita and Marc Minelli, "Electro Bamako" (Palm Pictures) - Is it jazz music?  Electronic? World?  The answer: all of the above.  This cross-cultureal duo - he from France, she from Mali - have orchestrated a unique collision of traditional Malian vocals with jazz piano, sax and drums, sirens and assorted noises.

It mostly works, although one can occasionally tell that these two never actually sat in the same studio together, let alone on the same continent. There's something of a disconnect going on, particularly when she's singing in a different time signature than his programmed beats.  In fact, computer wiz Minelli admits that he never even set foot in Africa until after this CD was completed - first in France with Universal Classics in 2001.  But the surprises are still plenty, and those who have never heard such disparate elements fusing as one are in for a treat.  Grade: B 06/15/03
