World Music Wednesday: Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou

One of the cool things about world music is that it gets you to expand your horizons. You know what’s typical or traditional music wherever you live, but it’s always a good thing to hear what musicians are doing in parts of the world with which you’re not familiar. Which brings us to Orchestre Poly-Rhthmo de Cotonou (yes, it certainly is a mouthful), a group from Benin. This is a group that had never played outside of its native country until 2009. Now thanks to technology, you don’t have to dig through dusty record bins in Benin to find this group’s music, which by the way, would also be a fitting selection for Funk Friday. This music not only features poly-rhythms, but also some really strong horns.
