FESTIVAL NEWS: RADIO RADIO, AUSTRA + SNEAK PEEK AT THE SEGMENTS

Oh my lord. It’s a little over a month before the festival. EEEKS! We’re actually in the middle of finalizing our entire program. We go to print in a few days with a fancy, sexy and colorful edition. Until then, we have a few more gems to tide you over. Fresh off the HUGE Osheaga festival, we are pleased to announce that Radio Radio, Austra and Yukon Blonde will be joining the POP party. We are also happy to add several major hip hop icons to the festival this year including Ill Bill, Onyx, Beatnuts, Alkoholiks and Big K.R.I.T., mad shout out to our peeps at Good Friday and Union Group for the collabs. Other highlights include A Tribe Called Red, PS I Love You, Sun Araw, Parlovr, Joseph Arthur, The Zoobombs, Canailles and our new fave jam Yacht Club featuring Young Guv from Fucked Up. It’s on! See ya in September.

But now, the grand moment everyone has been waiting for… A sneak peek at what Art POP, Film POP and the POP Symposium have been concocting all summer.

To start, Art POP and the PHI Centre, in association with DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art, are pleased to present lucky dragons for their first art performance in Montreal! The Los Angeles duo comprised of Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck have become known in the music and art worlds for their often improvised performances that encourage an inclusive audience experience. Art-savvy festival-goers will become participants in the lucky dragons project by creating sounds through the use of various technologies.

The POP Symposium is pulling more stellar names out of the vault, announcing Guy Picciotto (Fugazi, Rites of Spring) in conversation with Howard Bilerman, happening at l’École des Beaux-Arts, September 19th at 6:30pm. The legendary DC performer, engineer and producer has collaborated with artists like Vic Chesnutt, Jem Cohen, The Gossip, Blonde Redhead and The Make-Up. He and Bilerman will share an exchange about music, creativity and life on both sides of the glass.

The always exciting Film POP lineup will include this year iconoclastic gender benders, English eccentrics and mail-order outsiders, metalheads and psychedelic hippie cults, riots, rappers, night clubbers and much, much more! Among several signature events, Film POP enthusiastically presents the World Premiere of Sweet Nothing by Montreal filmmaker Andi State. Inspired by the band Suuns, this work compiles documentary footage shot and recorded on tour in Europe, throughout the promotion of the band’s debut album Zeroes Qc. A live performance by Suuns will follow the screening.

For those who really want to immerse themselves in the movie going experience, Film POP and the Goethe Institute will be presenting a rare screening of Jerzy Skolimowski‘s Deep End in the Trylon Apartments pool – with the audience in the water! This story of dark obsession features music by Can and stars McCartney ex Jane Asher. Admission will be limited, so movie-goers / swimmers are encouraged to come early!
