Sounds and Colours, Album Review >>

Bomba Estéreo’s Elegancia Tropical couldn’t come at a better time for Sounds and Colours’ New York City readers.

After a tumultuous week involving a brutal Hurricane by the name of Sandy and a subsequent Nor’easter, the Big Apple is in dire need of tropics with a side of elegance.

The Bogota-based electropical duo, led by bassist, programmer and producer, Simón Mejía, have gone mucho groovy on this one. Sure, the album is chock full of dancehall and champeta inspired tracks, and vocalist Li Saumet lets out fiery raps on a couple of tracks, but she does a great deal of singing, which is, as The Washington Post points out, “sensuous.” (They also call her Colombia’s answer to M.I.A. or Santigold. I tend to agree.)

“Elegancia Tropical” is the group’s fifth album. Stream it below. Then head over to iTunes to buy this 11-track charmer. Also, check out their new video for “Caribbean Power.”
