Regeneration is a fusion of Mexican roots music with sounds from the late 60s and early 70s. It also adds contemporary pop sounds that are accompanied with lyrics that provoke thought. Much like many of the songs from their library, “Free to Be Me”, “Adios California” and “Valor Latino” from Regeneration communicate Los Cenzontles’ need to express their concern with social issues that directly affect the Latin community. “Free to Be Me” presents conflicts of cultural identity, while “Valor Latino” proclaims Mexican Americans as being the future of the U.S.

RegenerationEugene Rodriguez, founder of the project, states that the new album continues to build on the voices, experiences and sounds of the band, and adds that in their extensive career are musicians, they have never felt any tension in presenting their own style of contemporary Mexican music. “I can hear an old traditional song for the first time and feel like I am listening to something completely new and exciting,” he said. “Strong roots music, whether old and new, always scratches an itch”.

Funded by Kickstarter, the album is also co-produced by Rodriguez. Proceeds from the album will go to the Los Cenzontles nonprofit organization.

Los Cenzontles are playing with David Hidalgo on October 12 in Chicago and on October 27 in the Bay Area. A September 23 date will take the band to the Mill Pond Festival in Bishop, California.
