DAVID LEWISTON: GLOBAL SOUND COLLECTOR
David Lewiston is not a musician. He’s a sound recordist, collecting musical moments from around the world. Remember the first album of Balinese Gamelan music or Tibetan chant you heard? Chances are it was recorded by David Lewiston. Since the mid-1960s Lewiston has been dragging tape recorders around the world and up mountains to capture the ecstatic music of other cultures. Many of these recordings were issued on by Nonesuch records on their Explorer series. Recently Nonesuch has been re-issuing three recordings for the first time on CD. We spoke with David Lewiston back in 1995 when this venerable pioneer of the world’s music talked about his travels and some of the sounds he’s experienced. 03/24/03 >> go there
