For ten years globalFEST has been a one-stop musical world tour for New Yorkers, bringing together artists from across the globe representing an array of styles and traditions. This year the lineup includes everything from the Native American DJ crew A Tribe Called Red to the Zimbabwean “Tuku music” of Oliver Mtukudzi. Of course, the festival also includes several Francophone artists like the genre-defying group Lo’jo, Malian chanteuse Fatoumata Diawara and guitarist Stephen Wembel, whose jaunty “Bistro Fada” served as the theme to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. All twelve acts will perform in one night on Sunday, January 13 at Webster Hall. We have put together a playlist of some of our favorite tracks by this year’s globalFEST artists to give you a taste of what you can hear next week. Reflecting the wide variety of performers, the playlist moves from Appalachian folk to brass band pyrotechnics and jazz-inflected improvisations from Turkey and Iran. 01/04/13 >> go there
