DAWNING Rami, the great 13th century Persian Sufi mystic poet, greatly influenced Katayoun Goudarzi growing up in Tehran. His lyrical words resounded on radio and were widely recited by dedicated artists. "Unity and love are the most fundamental parts of Rumi poetry," Goudarzi says. She often imagined the words intertwining with the sounds around her. Guided by the long-standing tradition of poetic narration and musical dialogue, she explored this connection after she made her home in the U.S. Collaborating with Shujaat Khan, a seventh generation North Indian classical sitar player, and three other talented musicians, Goudarzi sang the music of Rumi poetry in a riveting new album by her group Saffron, for Palmetto Records, $14.99. 01/17/13 >> go there
