ORCHID ENSEMBLE: Life Death Tears Dream (Orchidensemble.com): Continuing with its explorations of traditional Chinese music blended with other folk, experimental and other idioms, this local trio shines on its follow-up to the marvelous Road To Kashgar. Where that disc explored the cross-cultural meetings along the Silk Road, the 10 tracks here range from quite straight-ahead scoring of Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai (Dancing Moon) as opener to modern composer Barry Truax’s electro-acoustic soundtrack for a 16th Century Chinese Ghosts Story commissioned by the trio for a 2008 project exposing different cultures ideas of afterlife titled Ghost Project. In between there is Japanese flamenco, Hebrew hymns and the dazzling virtuosity of erhu player and singer Lan Tung, zheng musician Haiqiong Deng and percussionist/marimba player Jonathan Bernard. 01/29/13 >> go there
