Some of the most exciting developments in the world music scene are emerging within the global bass movement with the infusion of tribal, aboriginal, folk and global beats into electronic pieces. At the top of the list of these blow-your-musical-mind grooves away would be the productions of A Tribe Called Red, an Ottawa-based collective of DJ/Producers who mix dubstep-influenced dance music with elements of First Nations music, including vocal chanting and drumming. The group will bring the electric pow wow to the Mayne Stage on Sunday.

We visited with Bear Witness, Ian “DJ NDN” Campeau and Dan “DJ Shub” General to get insights into the activism that fuels their unique sound as well as their second and new recording, Nation to Nation. Visual artist Bear Witness also shared the philosophy behind the projected images that are an integral part of A Tribe Called Red’s performances.

It´s a fascinating perspective of how music and conscience can shape each other as we happily dance the night away!
