A lot of things claim to be unique but few really are. However, if you’re referring to the Canadian music crew A Tribe Called Red, you’re entirely correct using the word unique. The First Nation trio from Ontario mixes traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge electronic music.

The three First Nation (the Canadian equivalent of Native American) musicians, who will be in Philadelphia on May 31 for a show at Silk City, are referred to in their press bio as an Aboriginal electro-DJ trio from Ottawa. They have a genre all their own.

The threesome -- DJ NDN, DJ Shub and DJ Bear Witness -- just released a new album “Nation II Nation” on May 7. The group’s previous album “A Tribe Called Red” was released in 2012 and has always been available as a free download at the group’s website -- http://atribecalledred.com/music/.

“DJ NDN and I came together for the first time back in 2007 to showcase ourselves as aboriginal DJs in Ottawa,” said DJ Bear, during a recent phone interview. “That’s when we started throwing Electric Pow Wow parties.

“In 2009, we met DJ Shub when he came up for a talent show. We had an Electric Pow Wow that night so we invited him to play. He came up for a few more Electric Pow Wows and we asked him to join.

“Prior to Shub joining, we were doing mostly mash-up. Shub was a producer and mixer. He had been in bands and he had worked producing bands. But, this was his first attempt to do Pow Wow.”

A Tribe Called Red has a wide range of styles incorporated in its sound including dubstep, reggae, hip-hop and soca -- as well as aboriginal beats and rhythms.
