Runa is a Celtic music band with roots both in Ireland and America. Now based in Philadelphia, Runa’s path will have come full circle when it plays the Philadelphia Folk Festival in August.

Prior to its performances in Philadelphia, Runa will do one show locally and then head west for a month of shows before returning home for the folk festival. On July 7, Runa will perform a free concert in Lancaster as part of the Long’s Park Summer Concert Series.

Runa, which just released its third album “Somewhere Along the Road,” started as a duo featuring Fionan de Barra, a native of Dublin, Ireland on guitar, vocals and bodhran, and Shannon Lambert-Ryan, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia, on vocals, bodhran and step-dancing.

“Fionan and I met in 2006 at the Philadelphia Folk Festival,” said Lambert-Ryan, during a phone interview last week. “We were performing with different groups at the time. We talked about playing together. A year later, I went to Ireland to work with him on a solo project.”

The two found that they were extremely compatible in more ways than just music. Before long, they were a musical duo and a husband-and-wife team.

“The first real show we did as Runa was at a little bar in Philly called The Fire,” said Lambert-Ryan, who graduated from Council Rock High and Muhlenberg College. “I called Cheryl Prashker and asked her to play percussion and we’ve been working together ever since.

“After that, we added Maggie Estes on fiddle and Dave Curley on mandolin and bodhran. It all started with that show at The Fire. We’ve been working our way forward since then. We’ve been lucky to have people who get along as musicians and as friends.”
