Dreamy, groovy, endlessly shifting…… this is improvised music at its highest level. Fans of the work of Don Cherry, Sun Ra, and Yusef Lateef will find much to listen to in Go: Organic Orchestra’s music, which reminds me of Bitches’ Brew, but with acoustic instruments and African-inspired grooves.

The Go: Organic Orchestra story is about experience, and experiences. It’s not just Adam Rudolph’s story, although he puts every minute of his 35+ year career at the forefront of improvised music into every Go: Organic Orchestra effort and is the most active in guiding the experiences. It’s not simply a tale of of an unusual ensemble, especially for New York City: 33 musicians who have come together regularly since 1996 to form the only working improvising orchestra in the City, if not the entire country. It’s not only about Go: Organic Orchestra’s regular audience members, who come to every gig to hear how differently the music sounds from the last gig. Although Adam’s philosophies of the healing power of improvised music- and drums in particular- guide his art and the practice of it, the story is not entirely about that either. It’s not just a history of each individual musician’s vast experiences in nearly every music genre, from jazz trumpeter Graham Haynes and classical/jazz violinist Sarah Bernstein to Japanese bamboo flutist Kaoru Watanabe and Moroccan percussionist Brahim Fribgane.
