Jazz Weekly, CD Review >>

It seems that the next genre of sounds that is influencing jazz is Eastern European folk music. Serbian “turbo-folk” band Briga consists of Briga as vocalist and violinist, along with Tacfarinas Kichou/darbouka/Marton Maderspach/dr, Alix Noel/acc and Jeremi Roy/b melding elements of Bulgarian, Arabic, Roman/gypsy and Turkish music along with modern pop sensibilities. Material like the quizzical “On the 40” may raise some eyebrows, but more traditional material like “7/8 Makedonska” and “Duj Duj” mix earthy rhythms and exciting violin sounds that swirl in your brain until yuou feel you have to slap the table and start stomping on the floor. Danceable material like “Vihor” and the riveting “Titanic” will make you feel like you’re in a sweaty nightclub that’s just starting to gel at 2 am, which is what this band seems all about. Hit the ground running!
