Mexican dudes wearing orange and yellow tuxedos with embroidered flowers and cactuses and shit singing Ramones covers in their Tex-Mex powerpop and garage rock style. I’m sold. The Krayolas, the San Antonio based trio, is coming to Asbury Park’s Berkeley Bar on Thursday, August 8th at 10PM. Free as usual. But the band always gets paid. No shame in that. Prima donnas check your egos at the door.

These Texas garage legends, with borderless, upbeat, shake your booty rock ‘n roll, have no problem playing a free show, even though they’ve been compared to the likes of the Beatles, Doug Sahm, Bob Dylan, Los Lobos and the Who. The Krayolas, who were big hits at this past years SXSW festival in Austin, TX, played their Buddy Holly-inspired powerpop remake of the Ramones classsic “I Wanna Be You Boyfriend” and the epic tour de force corrido “Tony Tormenta (The Ballad of Tony the Storm).”

They’ve been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and are regulars on the Sirius XM program Little Steven’s Underground Garage. The band sings in both English and Spanish, but mostly in English so you won’t have to struggle to understand what the shit their talking about. I can’t us the “f” word so I just used shit instead. In 2012, the Krayolas fi rst digital album “Tex-Mex 21st Century” released exclusively through Amazon.com as a free download was ranked No. 1 on its Latin Digital Albums chart for an unprecedented 24 weeks, as well as reaching No. 1 on Amazon’s International Digital Album chart and No. 13 on its Top Digital Albums chart.

The Krayolas new single “Under One Roof” with Flaco Jimenez is an anthem for the times. It’s available exclusively as a free download from Amazon.com.

Mark Deming of All Music Guide calls out The Krayolas as “one of the American Pop Underground’s best-kept secrets for more than three decades.”

Margaret Moser of the Austin Chronicle chimes in saying “Doug Sahmlike strength that not only crosses borders, but binds cultures.”

So you know these dudes are good right? Go see ‘em. The Berkeley Bar is located inside the Berkeley Hotel at 1401 Ocean Ave in Asbury Park. Get more info at kitschens.com.
