Red Hot + FELA LIVE! is the opening concert of KRONOS at 40 on July 24. The world premiere concert in Damrosch Park is presented in anticipation of the forthcoming album release by HIV/AIDS awareness and relief organization, Red Hot. Red Hot + Fela celebrates the legacy of Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music and human rights activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Under the musical direction of Superhuman Happiness saxophonist Stuart Bogie, the concert brings together a diverse group of artists in an Afrobeat-meets-indie-meets-Afrofuturist gathering featuring Fela’s master drummer and long-time collaborator Tony Allen, and Superhuman Happiness, the Brooklyn-based group that unites members of Antibalas, tUne-yArDs, and Iron and Wine. Joining them are Sahr Ngaujah and Abena Koomson from Broadway’s and off-Broadway’s Fela!; Kalmia Traver, vocalist/saxophonist of indie-dance band Rubblebucket; and some of the leading Afrofuturist innovators: Belgium-based Congolese lyricist/rapper Baloji, Sudanese-born, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and singer Sinkane, and just added to the bill, revolutionary rapper M1 of the activist hip-hop crew, dead prez..
