No one should be shocked by the presence of women instrumentalists in rock these days. But does that mean celebrating them is off the table? Not if you ask She Shreds, a publication that bills itself as “the only magazine in the world dedicated to women guitarists and bassists.” This weekend, the magazine brings its touring festival, Shred Fest, to D.C. for the first time. Among the fest’s 15 bands are Ex Hex, the new band from Wild Flag and Helium singer/guitarist Mary Timony, and Nashville’s warm and folksy Cry Baby (shown), which includes Heavy Cream drummer Tiffany Minton and Fuckshow lead singer Wesley Trew. The opening of Bluejacket, the Navy Yard restaurant and brewery from Neighborhood Restaurant Group, is only weeks away, but in the meantime, head to group's "gargantuan beer jamboree" Snallygaster at Union Market this Saturday.
