Jazz Weekly, Album Review >>

If you want to hear some of the real roots of American blues and jazz, this session my Malian singer/guitarist Mamadou Kelly is just what you’re looking for. Simple, basic and plaintive, the backup of Alpha Ousmane Sankare/perc-voc, Grehima Hama Cisse/perc and Baba Traore/b with their traditional instruments deliver intimate and relaxed pieces sch as “ Mahindjene” and the gently lilting “Nansongo.” Kelly’s voice is rich and sandy, as he sings about topics from farming to self reliance on “Sehenon Men” and “Goue Ini Bongosse.” If the Delta blues were in the Niger River instead of the Mississippi, they might sound like “Adounia” or the sauntering “Fissa Maiga.” It’s like meeting a distant relative here, with characteristics that seem at once exotica and yet still familiar.
