Gypsy Dream Forenc Illenyi:

Gypsy Jazz is not just another style of music; it was born as a statement – of purpose, taste, a musical mission – for a generation of inspired artists. Often said to have been started by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s, contemporary Gypsy jazz is thriving today, with fans found all over the globe. Among those contemporary Gypsy Jazz ensembles performing today is one lead by Ferenc Illenyi, a Hungarian-born, classically trained violinist who currently holds the first violinist position with the Houston Symphony. On Gypsy Dream (Mesa/Bluemoon, 2014), Illenyi’s delves deep into the music of his soul on 11-great compositions that feature his violin virtuosity. Accompanied by pianist Andrew Leinhard, bassist Chris Maresh, guitarist Erich Avinger and several guest musicians, the recording was produced by George Nauful and Erich Avinger. As you will hear, dear listener, Ferenc Illenyi is an exceptionally gifted violinist who not only explores Gypsy music on this recording but also captures the vitality of Flamenco on “Boabdit, Bulerias.” The song also features the inspired accompaniment of tabla player Dexter Ragjunanan. “Gypsy Caprice,” is yet another vehicle for Illenyi’s mastery of the violin, i.e. staccato, the graceful decorations via his impeccable bowing, and for Scott Holshouser’s exemplary piano accompaniment. Later in the program, Illenyi performs “A Minor Swing,” which Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli made famous. With so much of the music’s impact directly related to its time and place, it’s no surprise that Gypsy Jazz has acquired an almost mystical stature in the history of jazz. Gypsy Dream reconnects fans to the spirit of the style and because of his excellent recording, Ferenc Illenyi very likely is helping to accelerate his artistic expression to another level of appreciation.  03/01/14 >> go there
