A Real Cohiba…Pedro Luis Ferrer: Final

by George W. Harris •

If you want your Cuban music to feel like you’re in the village instead of the nightclub, Pedro Luis Ferrer is your guy. He makes the Buena Vista Social Club seem like a bunch of city slickers on this collection of twelve tunes. His voice is as dark and rich as Cuban Coffee, and most of the time he’s just got a guitar and a tiny bit of percussion as he serenades you with sonic flavors that come across like garlic chicken and rice, making your mouth water. A song or two such as “Cristina” have some strings to give a more pop flavor, but its the tunes like “Dicen de ti, dicen de mi” and “Madrigal de un Sueno” with their spartan support which allow Ferrers voice to rumble like a ’57 Bel Air on Zanja Street. This is music to savor like a Cohiba. Let this one fill your ears.
