April 11 Ensemble Tartit Venue: The Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N Lincoln/ 8:00 PM $20, $18 Old Town School members, $16 seniors and kids/(773) 728-6000
Originally formed in a refugee camp in Burkina Faso, where members fled repression by the Malian army, Ensemble Tartit create mesmerizing harmonies set to the complex rhythms built upon their cries, shouts, and handclapping. Accompanied by the tehardent and imzod, predecessors of the guitar and violin, their voices capture the ancestral beauty of the nomadic music from the Sahara Desert. Culled from the traditional songs of the Tuaregs of the Kel Antessar Confederation, a nomadic group who live in the Niger River Basin of northern Mali, they combine traditional songs about traveling, and the tales of heroic men and women of the past with newer material relating to the changing roles of women and the quest for peace. 04/01/03
