Luso Americano, Mariza Brings the Passion, Pain and Mystery of Fado to the Kemmel Center >>

The critically acclaimed "Princess of Fado" Mariza will bring the passionate sounds of Portugal's native song to the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater on Wednesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Of Mariza Billboard writes, "Her voice is a gorgeous evocative instrument, and she sings with bravura and power...the world has met the next great Portuguese 'fadista'."

The Mozambique-born singer was a baby when she moved to Portugal, the birthplace of fado, "the Portuguese cafe music that sets haunted songs about fate and destiny to the pristine picking of the Portuguese guitar." (The New York Times)  A highly emotional style of music, fado is filled with blissful joy, heart-breaking sorrow, jealousy and, often, satire.  Before the singer could even read, Mariza was singing this powerful music using drawings her father sketched out on pieces of paper to help her remember the words.

Now, Mariza is hailed as one of the best fado singers since the late great Amalia Rodrigues (the universally acknowledged "queen of fado").

Praise for Mariza comes from well beyond the fado and world music communities.  In July 2002, the singer received a standing ovation from a hip-hop crowd at a packed Hollywood Bowl after opening for R&B star Lauren Hill, a particularly rare accomplishment for an opening  act who was also relatively unknown to that audience.

Mariza released her latest CD, Fado Curvo, in May, following the succes of her well received debut album, Fado Em Mim, which earned her the title Princess of Fado." 07/02/03
