Some like their fado straight-up; Mariza Nunes prefers to spike it. Since her debut, 2001's Fado Em Mim, the Mozambique-born chanteuse has been turning the world of traditional Portuguese song on its head. Her colourful dress, funky hair and unusual delivery has excited and perplexed purists, but the power and versatility of Mariza's voice is undeniable on Fado Curvo, a starkly arranged collection of mainly modern songs. It would be churlish to wish that Mariza aped her predecessors, but her collaboration with producer Carlos Maria Trinidade (Madredeus) is uneven. Mariza's delivery so consistently urgent and plaintive, she squashes the tentative guitars in the background and, over time, taxes the ears. She's at her best when settling back and understating the lyrics, using the delicate instrumentation as a foil. Elsewhere, her drama overwhelms everything. Bring on the pumping
Mariza plays the Isabel Bader Theatre Aug. 9. 08/07/03
