Mariza gave her set a distinctly exotic cast, and not just because she performs a type of music (Portuguese fado) not often heard in Edmonton. Her regal attitude and long gowns stood out on a stage more accustomed to jeans and T-shirts, and she may have been one of the few performers in festival history to indulge in a costume change. The force of her singing, and the courtly yet nimble grace of her ensemble, made a big impression, coaxing the event's first standing ovation from the forward third of the crowd. But she was clearly unused to playing such an open venue, which cast a veil of uncertainty over her dramatic pauses. 08/11/03
