SPEAKING OF BIMBO'S 365 CLUB, the legendary venue plays home to Mariza the rising star and Queen of Fado who's here direct from Portugal making her Bay Area debut on Saturday, Aug. 2. Mariza was born in Mozambique but her family moved to Portugal when she was a baby. Before she could read, her father would sketch cartoon stories to help her remember lyrics. By age five, she would join the spontaneous singing in her parents' restaurant in Mouraria, one of Lisbon's most traditional neighborhoods. Fado is Portugal's Blues or Rebetika or Tango or Flamenco.
"They all stand on emotions," says Mariza. "Fado is an emotional kind of music full of passion, sorrow, jealousy, grief, and often satire." You can catch Mariza at Bimbo's, 1025 Columbus Ave. in San Francisco. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the show is at 9 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 at the door.
