Mariza Fado Curvo (Times Square TSQ-CD-9033 (2003)  The second album from rising Portuguese star Mariza is a delight, simultaneously straightforward and intricate.  Mariza sings fado a genre often likened to the blues for its similarities in sound and mood, but which still remains largely tied to its country of origin.  That may be about to change, though.  Already compared to fado legend Amailia Rodrigues, Mariza possesses the same creative and emotional boldness.  most of the music on Fado Curvo (the latter word in the title means  “curved” or “winding”) is original, and her expressive voice makes a mockery of the language barrier (though translations of the lyrics are provided for the curious).  With her outspoken, powerful performance style and dynamic presentation, Mariza has all the makings of a diva who could make fado an intercontinental phenomenon.
