Radio 3 has announced the winners of its 2003 World Music Awards. Portuguese fado singer MARIZA has won the award for Europe. 'I'm so happy about it,' she says. 'I couldn't imagine it happening for my first record.' She offers this poetic description of fado. 'The traditional place to hear it is in the tavernas - you have to imagine a dark atmosphere, lots of smoke, red wine, chorizo on the tables. And you hear a female singer with a Portuguese guitar performing these melancholy poems with very deep meanings.' 03/01/03
