Mariza, Fado Curvo (Time Square Records)

The Portuguese fado singer with the stunning looks of a flapper-era pop diva fully justifies those who've dubbed her the successor to legendary Amalia Rodrigues. On a dozen tracks, the Mozambique-born Mariza, who won the BBC World Music Award this year and was a hit at last year's Quebec Summer Festival, is full of confidence, distinguishing herself with bell-pealing tones and knowledge of how to exploit emphases and climaxes in this national song form that's almost always shot through with melancholy. She slyly includes hints of jazz and rock in her approach as well as new poetry sources that point up the elements of joy and pain in fado. Her accomplished musicians on guitars, bass, viola and piano, with numerous guests, capture the mood well. There's a little fun (the title piece, for example) but elsewhere it's very emotional, especially on dark-themed songs that translate as "Caravels", "Spring" and "Curls Of My Hair." She's coming to The Phoenix on May 3. 04/24/03
