[excerpt]
Born in Mozambique and raised in Mouraria, a cradle of traditional life in Lisbon, Mariza was immersed in fado, Portugal's national folk music, from an early age. Her vocal intensity earned the approval of the world-music critics when she won the best newcomer artist award from the British Broadcasting Corp. in 2003. Her latest album, "Fado Curvo," introduces violin, piano, and horns as well as jazz and blues to the music's often guitar-driven melancholy. 05/09/03
