Sunday Times (London), Review: Mariza Fado Curvo >>

The stark rhythms and declamatory vocals ensure that Mariza's brand of fado -- Portugal's answer to the blues -- is never going to be easy listening for outsiders.  Her debut album took a while to digest, although she swept all before her by the time she arrived at Womad in the summer.  Perseverance has its rewards, because the Mozambique born singer -- acclaimed as the successor to the late Amalia Rodrigues -- is growing in authority by the week.  If you have seen her live, you will know how charismatic a performer she can be, though the austere stage manner can obscure her sense of mischief.  The poetic lyrics on Fado Curvo are by turns poignant, enigmatic, and joyous.  Miguel Goncalves's muted trumpet enhances the introspective mood of O Deserto.  Listen to it twice and you will be intrigued.  A third time, and you will be seduced. 05/25/03
