The most influential ska band in the history of Jamaican music, the Skatalites helped to lay the foundation of what later grew into reggae.  With its latest album, From Paris With Love, recorded during its European tour of December 2001, the Kingston-based band takes a further step.  While only bassist Lloyd Brevett and trumpeter Johnny “Dizzy” Moore remain from the original group, the spirit is retained through the playing of such newcomers as trombonist Will Clark and jazz guitarist Devon James.  Doreen Shaffer adds vocals to three tunes, but it’s the instrumentals – including treatments of “From Russia With Love,” “Pata Pata (Skata Skata),” and a reworking of the band’s trademark, “Guns of Navarone” – that makes this such a cherished recording.
