Orlando Weekly, Noteable Noise, Skatalites >>
Skatalites still claiming three members from the original, early '60s incarnation of the group (trailblazing instrumentalists Tommy McCook and Jackie Mittoo are dead), the Skatalites could be credited by some as the group that's largely responsible for the sound behind the contemporary reggae movement. Although not officially a group until 1964, those original members were -- like the Funk Brothers or the MG's -- the unsung session machine that ignited the spark behind the genesis of ska and reggae. And, like the Funk Brothers or the MG's, a big reason to go see the Skatalites is to simply watch legends in action. It's not about witnessing groundbreaking or revolutionary music, so don't go expecting to have your ideas about reggae changed. But do expect an incredible show from some incredible musicians.
