In the early 1960s, several of Jamaica's finest musicians, including several alumni of the Alpha Boys School, joined forces as the Skatalites.  Though the original band lasted less than two years, the Skatalites laid down a hugely influential body of work.  With clipped, repetitive guitar riffs, galloping "one-drop" rhythms and plenty of horns, the Skatalites defined "ska," the precursor of reggae, ad sketched the blueprint for Madness, the Specials, and other British groups of the '80s, as well as No Doubt and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.  A decade ago, several original Skatalites reunited, reviving "The Guns of Navarone," "Man In the Street" and other classics. The band's latest CD is "From Paris With Love," featuring original drummer Lloyd Knibb, bassist Lloyd Brevett, saxophonist Lester Sterling, trumpeter Johnny "Dizzy" Moore and vocalist Doreen Schaffer.
